Packed up and out of Terra
Nova by 8:00 AM after a great shower and check in at the internet
cafe. This morning our destination was Lumsden, NFLD, a small
community open to the Atlantic in most directions. We passed
through Gambo, Hare Bay and Centreville along the way. The fresh
water entering the bay here surely seemed like prime salmon fishing
territory! We really were astounded at the rocks which seem to
be strategically placed in the rivers... Almost as though they
were dropped in so an agile angler could hop from one to the
next.
When we landed in the Town of Lumsden
it was overcast but comfortable. We took several streets including
Marine Dr. down to the wharf. Lovely little cove protected by
a surly breakwater (see header), with a fair sized fleet seeming
to be making preparations. Although overcast, we managed several
representative pictures that you can see in the Gallery. Kind
of interesting looking at the water tower with a big "Lumsden"
down the side! Perhaps most striking was the way being there
was like being in Canso... it all felt very strong in the realm
of coincidence.
From Lumsden we had previously
planned to loop back to Gander and the TCH. I wanted to sneak
a peek at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum there, and especially
get a chance to view the "Canso Water Bomber" that
is on exhibit there. The "Canso" was the Royal Canadian
Air Force name for the American built and designed Consolidated PBY Catalina, and named
such as part of the RCAF tradition of naming seaplanes after
coastal port towns. However, change of route was decided as we
also wanted to make north for Twillingate. The idea was to look
around, get a few photos and maybe source some lunch.
We made Twillingate at lunchtime, and it was
very busy. Kind of shows how a community at the end of the road
can be a thriving entity! We drove around the bay enjoying the
boat laden cove and peeking at local businesses. We came to rest
at a local eatery, R&J Restaurant... overlooking the fishing
boats and with seafood on our minds. All hands opted for the
Fish 'n Chips... And the fish was fresh and didn't disappoint!
The batter was very light letting the fish "be the hero"
as Janie put it. It was a refreshing stop!
Weather held nicely for most
of the afternoon, until we arrived at 3:30 PM in Grand Falls
- Windsor in the pouring rain. Quick adjustment from camping
to hotel! We had booked a tent site at the Provincial campground
(Notre Dame) but decided against camping in a downpour. With
no means to dry sleeping gear and tent it just didn't make sense.
Janie scrambled and hooked us up at a roadside motel that was
quick, warm, and dry place to sleep... Little rustic, but we
were in good shape when we awoke. As far as I was concerned,
an excellent repurposing of $100!
With pizza for supper, a couple
of HGTV episodes, and a quick shower... The night ended quickly
as I think everyone had been swallowed by the days drive. Less
driving on Day 6 is what I promised!!!
