Christmas 2013 presented a
real opportunity. Not only did it mark our 10th winter in Cloverville...
It afforded us a 16 day window that had "road trip"
written all over it! So, in the fall I started looking at potential
destinations. Maybe something warm in the Caribbean... How about
something in beautiful Montreal/Quebec City? Nope. Not even close!
We chose Atlanta... Home to "Gone With the Wind", Coca-Cola,
the 1996 Summer Olympics!!! Let the planning begin.
We love the freedom driving
gives us to move easily from city to city and selecting attractions/accommodations
that we want to experience. However, Atlanta is some 30 highway
hours from Antigonish, NS... That's a real commitment. After
a "family" chat, we went for it. With Atlanta set as
the turnaround point, we broadened the stays to Savannah, Petersburg
and Washington DC. This was built into a travel loop using attractions
we wanted to visit. By departure time, we had a pretty full itinerary
that had something for everyone.
Different this time was the
"looming" presence weather played in this adventure.
It seemed we were ever vigilant in regards to checking weather
and highway conditions. One can plan all he/she wants, but when
you're driving, Mother Nature is most likely going to be in charge.
To that end, we had apps loaded and presets that did forecasting
alerts for communities along the route. Mike went over the vehicle
the Monday before our departure and we were armed with fluids
topped up and four studded winter tires. We hoped they wouldn't
be necessary.
Among attractions, we continued
our tradition of grabbing some pro sports, we got in a couple
of National Battlefield Parks, and once again used a CityPass
option for our Atlanta choices. Herein you'll find info on what
we did and the things we saw. It was a pretty awesome run...
Learning lots and putting a visual on spaces we've long only
heard about. Our pictures can be found in the "Gallery"
in the left index.
