e Itinerary - Day Four

The wind eased a bit on Tuesday... So we set up for a day in the sand... BEACH DAY!!! We gathered up the necessities and on the beach by 8:00 am! Monica worked diligently on sand castles, dad held down a beach cot, Peter had his goggles locked on for swimming, Eileen with sunscreen and camera at the ready, Jane the coordinator of all of it... all hands had a great day. There were lots of added toys to try on the beach as well, and the open kayaks and paddle boats were a hit!

The sun worshipers were in full force Tuesday. It seems tops are somewhat optional as well. My how North American existence is sheltered and conservative. Anyway, I did get my feet "warmed" pretty good by the morning sun. I was the first to get sunburned, I guess my feet got cold (my burnt feet itched for about 7 days) in the morning at the beach and I dangled them in the sun. Nothing major though... Taken care of with some cream and the evening dip! I wasn't the only one, as conversations with other maritimers found them in the same bind or much worse. We cooled off in a couple of ways. Firstly, we enjoyed a couple of rounds of those yummy piña coladas, the adults enjoying the one's with rum. Secondly, we took a big family dip in the pool at 5:00 when things had quieted down for the day. Enjoyed by all!

Sunning on the beach is a way of life for some folks. It looked like a science as bathers rolled in perfect time and angled for the best possible warmth from the rays. I have to admit, I did nod off for an hour or so on the beach wrapped in my mega blue towel. Yet, for those as pale as I... methinks this behaviour would prove quite dangerous. Oh... and the reviews in regards to sand fleas and mosquitoes were all absolute nonsense. Janie and Monica each received a mosquito bite but they were tiny and not very itchy. Apparently Cuban mosquitoes aren't starving to death like Canadian mosquitoes.

On Tuesday evening we had made reservations for one of the à la carte spaces, The Cuban Grill. All hands got cleaned up and we strolled to the grill for a late lunch. I got a chance to show off my new Cuban shirt, called a guayabera, and everyone got fancied as best as possible living out of suitcases. We had been warned about Cuban food prior to the trip by friends and had read the reviews, both good and bad. However, we had no issues landing a solid supper, with fish and chicken on the menu and plenty of wine and mojito to round things out!
