Up and at it Friday morning,
with a slight change in plans. Overnight we decided to extend
our stay one more evening and make our departure Saturday in
the am. At this point I went back to our plans and shuffle a
MOMA visit until later in the day when Janie could partake. With
a day to free wheel... I went looking for up to date info in
regards to potential options. Missed the laptop at this point,
which serves as my launch point for most of our excursions. Regardless,
if one can't find something to do in NYC they'd best hang 'er
up.
So, while Janie headed off
to class we headed back in to Times Square to do some "people
watching". We strolled in and out of several stores, including
the M&M palace, the Hershey dome and Toys R Us! Then we went
for a huge dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. The fare was excellent, with
none of us able to finish the plate. Kids enjoyed the space and
the artifacts around the restaurant. Then we walked back to meet
up with Janie.
Friday afternoon we used the
last item in our City Pass, tickets to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). This was the
first time in this building for us. I had a couple of artists
in mind. Van Gogh's Starry Night, Monet's Water Lilies,
and Jackson Pollock's Number One were highlights. Also,
works by Dali, Tanguay and Kandinsky were a welcome part of the
visit. Amazing building with an incredibly open concept both
on floors and between floors across the main common areas. Quite
a visit.
By the time we left MOMA, we
were facing a steady rainfall. First bad weather of the trip,
and we were very glad we hadn't scheduled our Yankees visit for
Friday!!! After supper at TGIF, and quick stops to shop on Broadway,
we went to an evening show, The Phantom of the Opera. I had managed
to purchase a line of 4 tickets in the afternoon's travels and,
after visiting the opera house in Paris, I thought it would be
a relevant stop. The Majestic Theatre, on 44th, was the location
and we made our way to our seats (pretty close to the back) where
Monica mentioned that we could see the ceiling better than the
stage.
Firstly, great show with lots
of energy, gorgeous set and acting galore. We were totally impressed!!!
It was my first time seeing the entire production, but there
was a lot of familiarity in the music and scenes because "The
Phantom" has such a place in popular culture. I think we
all got sucked into the show, characters and the storyline. I
sort of thought the kids may get a bit "lost" in the
storyline but they hung in there admirably. As our kids (as well
as Janie and I) see more works / productions I think we'll become
more discriminating consumers of the arts, but for now we're
still in the wow stage!!! It's an evolution methinks...
