One pretty long day Sunday.
Janie and I split the driving pretty evenly, with me taking the
early leg and Janie navigating Augusta through to Fredericton.
We set out at about 6:30 am and were crossing the Mass / Me border
by noon. I think I hopped in and out of sleep on the trip to
Houlton... the part of the drive I find the longest.
As per our usual planning,
and perhaps part of our "Catholic Guilt" which often
rises to the surface, we had everything super ready and accurate
at the border. Slips and passports in hand, spending figured
out to the dime, and everyone in the car understanding we were
crossing the border home. Went well with no issues... we get
nervous here no matter how many times we cross and I think we
apologized (for no particular reason) at least half a dozen times.
I'm not sure why, as we really never bring anything back we're
not allowed and we don't spend enough shopping to come close
to our per visitor limits.
I would not normally article
a blazing sort of drive like this, but wanted to note how well
the kids have this sort of "mega" journey, which lasted
about 14 hrs, figured out. From the time we set out to our arrival
in Antigonish, I couldn't help but be amazed at how they settled
in and handled the drive. Snacks, turns using the i-pod, picking
songs, listening to e-books, solitaire, snoozes... it all went
so nicely. I would suggest that I could have never been taken
on any sort of trip like this at their age without beating the
sides out of the car!!!
Anyway, I arrived home at 10:00
pm with the kids. Janie went through to PEI with her Mom to pick
up the extra car and she strode in by about 1:00 am. Quite a
trip, considering the time of year and the number of places we
managed to take in.
