Last morning... Day Eight and
the end of our vacation. The plan was to spend the morning (prior
to check-out time) sightseeing, then to move on and make a dash
for home.
Vieux Montreal - After
packing everything up we set out on a purely sightseeing venture
to see Old Montreal. Our early trek, after a quick breakfast
at Place Ville-Marie, took us to the romantic, European streets
of vieux-Montreal. Although not as "tidy" as Quebec
City, the shops, eateries and galleries were great eye candy
as we strolled the cobble streets. The many quaint churches,
stone architecture and building signs kept us constantly looking.
We wondered what the price tag must be on property in this part
of the city?
From old Montreal we wandered
into le quartier chinois and once again wandered the markets
and tiny shops. Lots of Asian residents and entrepreneurs and
fairly well kept. I likened it somewhat to a neighborhood in
a neighborhood. Just prior to departing, we roamed some of the
expansive underground mall area downtown. We figured that in
winter you could probably work, eat and sleep in the area without
ever having to actually step outside. It was like an iceberg,
with more below ground than above!!!
After check-out, we made our
way out of Montreal via the tunnel and struck out for all points
east (the GPS directed us to the bridge but it was packed so
we plowed onward and had faced no tie-ups at the tunnel). We
had a great run, with excellent weather and driving conditions
and only several stops for supplies and relief from the driving.
Great run, and a great trip to two of the most bilingual regions
of the country.
