Janie’s pick of accommodation worked out splendidly. We had a cozy sleep and an “All Maine Breakfast” of blueberry pancakes, granola and coffee (minus the Canadian strawberries). While enjoying, Aaron Porter dropped in to say hello and catch up on the news. He works as an editor for WoodenBoat magazine and invited us out for a tour of the grounds. At that point we freshened up, gathered our belongings and checked out. We met Aaron an hour later for a “walk and talk” that wove in Wooden Boat’s courses/workshops, the beautiful cove filled with finely crafted boats, chatter about local industry/politics, and of course his family. We very much appreciated him taking time from his schedule to show us around. Nicely done!
Then off to Ellsworth for a quick peek at the Bean Outlet there. Gorgeous coastal driving in this area, as the highway links the many small oceanside communities. Wharves and walkways teeming with vessels of all shape and size. The major downtown areas are quite well kept and tourist ready with lots of service. With purchasing done, the plan was to grab a snack and rumble back into Blue Hill and connect with Than at the local grocer for supplies.
Just a little before 2:00 PM we located the TradeWinds Markets, the skies opened with a decent down pour, and Than arrived. All hands on deck to handle the supply list, then a 25 minute commute across Deer Isle to Sunset, Me. Here Stephenie, Elias and Amelia patiently waited with the boat which would provide passage to Great Spruce Head Island (GSHI). So nice to see the Porter family again. Everyone quickly assembled to say hellos, load the vessel, and make vehicle arrangements. Elias navigated a pot laden Penobscot to safely land us at the GSHI pier shortly after.
Then into the routine of the island… Discussion, meal preparation, and refreshment. We had time to talk and convene our own “State of the Union”, enjoying conversation and an excellent candle lit lobster supper. The coolness of the island air was much appreciated. As the evening progressed we caught up on the “goings on” of friends and family, and after all in the kitchen was at rest we retired to the fireplace and the crackle of softwood. Incredibly relaxing evening for us after a solid week of travel… So very nice to be back with friends.
