Janie and I set out early Thursday and embarked on this reunion excursion without Peter (working) and Monica (Big Cove Camp). Although flying solo felt a little different, most of Eastern Canada was under an Environment Canada “Heat Warning” and we were looking forward to finding the coolness of saltwater and energy of connecting with old friends. We had been in touch with the Porters, who were heading from Montreal looking for cooler temperatures as well, so we decided on some camping the night before reunion. After a quick search, our destination settled to Kouchibouguac National Park near Richibucto, NB.
Indeed, it was still very warm in Kouchibouguac NP. When we arrived midday at our Otentik, in South Kouchibouguac Camground, we set-up site and surveyed the Parks Canada options. These Otentik sites were well equipped, with all manner of dishware, electricity and gas BBQ ready for use. Everything but the kitchen sink (literally). However, the hillside location was pretty close, and we quickly turned our eyes toward the boardwalk and Kelly’s Beach. The ocean water, listed at 13 degrees, was somewhat shocking in comparison to the 35-40 degree humidex. Regardless, very scenic and absolutely refreshing! Loved the boardwalk!
Somewhere near 6:00 PM the Porters arrived and after schlepping any necessary supplies we once again trekked to the beach for cooling. Lovely chance to walk and get caught up away from the heat of the day! Supper saw everyone involved in prepping a huge chicken meal with spuds, salads, and obligatory (and yummy) Gin & Tonics! Wonderful evening! We even had an unexpected visitor (Mr Raccoon) who liberated a package of Stephenie’s Crackers.
By way of coincidence, I had dropped a text with Chris Surette as I often do when landing at a new park. He always has some great “A for Adventure” tips for getting the most out of a Parks Canada visit! Who’d a thunk… they were hosting an International Student event at Kouchibouguac and were on deck! We had visits with both Chris and Jan. Love the positivity these guys bring to any discussion and, of course, their passion for the outdoors and being active. Great discussion before all hands sacked out and called it a night.
