Taking stock of a journey like this one helps put a lot into perspective. Travel is, in essence, a wonderful privilege we’ve been afforded through cumulative years of hard work. We chose to do so because we absolutely enjoy seeing, learning and especially doing! I document & journal the events as keepsake, tool for recall, a method for sharing with family & friends, and, mostly, to support deeper thinking on what we’ve experienced. Having people comment, communicate and lend encouragement online is icing on the cake! We understand that we have been incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to do this.
Statistically speaking, the numbers on this trip are absolutely daunting. To undertake would not be for the meek. It starts with the Rav odometer… and of course ends with Scotiabank 😳!
- Distance: 12,314 kms
- Kms/Day: 1070 kms
- Fuel ($ 🇨🇦): $1,733
- Drive Time: 122.75 Hrs
- Drive Time/Day: 10.75 Hrs
Gotta say… team work won the day on this! Lots of cooperation in regard to drive time, piloting with GPS, snacks / meals, fuel stops, accommodation / attraction reservations… all the bits that are required on such an undertaking. It always seemed that when one of us got tired, the other was ready to fill in! Absolutely would have sucked alone… can’t imagine trucking it!
In our case, the rewards were many. We got to see portions of our country from Antigonish west… dipping toes in the Pacific, Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron. The Prairies, Rockies, Canadian Shield of Ontario were all driving firsts! The return through the northern states of Washington, Montana, Minnesota and Wisconsin opened a window on understanding more about our neighbours. We stopped where and when we wanted… having very few “timed” events to contend with. We ate well, rested when required, caught a couple of ball games & museums, roamed city and park… can’t think of a lot I’d change right now if I was doing it again!
