So… We woke up to a very warm, but wet, NYC kind of morning! The forecast readied us for showers to rain until the afternoon. So glad we got our High Line walk in on Monday… Hard to believe it’s still this warm even as far north as New York. Realizing we might have to adjust our day somewhat, Janie and I stole off downstairs for some breakfast and planning time. Also took off for a morning stroll, prior to most of the city waking up, across Times Square into the Bryant Park & Public Library area. It was relaxing.
Timed entry tix gained us quick access shortly after door opening to Star Wars and the Power of Costume, our second visit to this type of Discovery Centre Times Square exhibit (our first was a Harry Potter production). On the heels of the latest movie release, we nerded it along with a line up that held all shape, nationality and age. The exhibit was fun, with costume replicas from a wide cross section of Star Wars movies and characters. Although I’ve seen all the movies, couldn’t help but reconsider how integral a role costume and what the characters wore has on the overall impact of the saga. From robes to robots, light sabre to storm trooper, or bikini to Chewbacca, it was a great glimpse at movie making and storytelling.
After Janie wedged in a short stop to unearth some Broadway Tix, we decided on an official New York “whole pie” at John’s Pizzeria. This came highly recommended by fellow travel enthusiast Mike Hinchey… And we now know Mike knows his pizza! Great stop, with tasty thin crust coal-oven fired pizzas made to order, at excellent price, in a classic setting. All hands in our group gave it the two thumbs up!
By the time we left John’s the rain had subsided, so we set our sights on a stroll through Central Park. We hoofed down the 15 or so blocks into the southern entrance and just about dropped $50 for a horse drawn tour until the kids dissuaded me. Instead we traipsed a winding path back and forth until we came to the American Museum of Natural History entrance. On our walk we were treated to some live music, a wedding, and some of those fancy, warm vendor peanuts. Central Park is a real jewel amidst the stone, glass and pavement. We noticed the quiet of the park almost immediately.
We caught the subway south to 42nd street, then back to the Hampton to regroup. I actually may have kinked for an hour or so before we hit the streets once more to grab our tix to “Something Rotten” at St James Theatre. Broadway tix were difficult to come by, but Janie sourced four together so we snapped them up. Looking after arrangements for a show was Janie’s pick for the trip! After a nice supper in a local diner, we entered the line for entry. What a great “musical”! We thoroughly enjoyed the comedy that works hard to poke fun at Broadway itself… Set in the 1590’s with the bard, Shakespeare. The often quickly paced humour was challenging to keep up with, but we did just fine. Thnx so much to Janie for sourcing the tix!
