Big breakfast, complements of the Barry’s, and a comfortable sleep. After saying goodbyes, we made a 9:00 AM departure in the hopes of getting ahead of some oncoming weather that promised rain, sleet and snow! We first tackled the 1 hr drive to the new St Stephen border crossing… it was our first time there since construction in late 2009. We experienced a 20 minute wait time (only 1 gate open) and really noticed the complete bypass of Calais, Me.
Then down State Route 9 (or more affectionately the “Airline”). This portion of the trip was a bit of an adventure as we ran into some tough weather, with rain/sleet freezing to the windshield on contact! We decided to divert south towards the coast and Ellsworth (we followed salt/sand trucks all the way down Rte 191). With that in hand, we were in need of a break and set up at LL Bean, unloading some of our hard earned Canadian cash. Most stuff at 40% or more off so good deals. Plus, we don’t mind parting with funds for quality clothing. Girls were happy with their purchases!
While on the Bean WiFi we made contact with Stephenie… she gave us a great lunch tip and we ate burritos at 86 This on the main drag in Ellsworth. Yum… the ladies had burritos filled with yam while I had something referred to as a “Boss Hog”! Great meal, and fun business model. I thought specifically of the savings in regards to it being wrapped and served in a plastic basket, with no utensils. That’d be a huge savings in the run of an enterprise!
Then off to Appleton with just one side trip… grabbing some provisions! Always fun to get into an unfamiliar Grocery Store. We found a Hannafords in Bucksport and spent 1/2 hr wandering the aisles there… lots of veggies, fruits, drinks and snacks! 🤓 Then a good run on better roads to Appleton. Upon arrival we were welcomed at Chez Porter and slipped into an evening of refreshments, stories, and updates. Tremendous pasta supper… so homey!
