Balkans ’26 – Day One

Departure from the “Nish

Well now… travel day turned out to be a Friday the 13th 😱 departure! What could go wrong? Perhaps just the opposite that one might come to expect… SRCE Snow Day. We spent the bulk of the day at school completing marking and prepping classrooms for return after break. Leaving things in a good space! As check in for Air Canada YHZ – LHR rolled into the phones, we took care of that piece of business as well. Having already packed bags Thursday evening, itinerary printed, passports double checked and cards in hand, we left from home without interruption. Although winterish, we took our time on the well worn route to the city that was snow covered, but passable!

Visit to Sosta

It’s pure selfishness, but when we travel via flight from Halifax we love the stay at Alt Hotel Halifax Airport. It’s so convenient… but $$$ 😬! They do have a package that is a 1 night stay and 8 Days parking which checks all the boxes, a great little restaurant (Sosta) for a meal and a dandy Guinness pour! We parked indoors, had a smooth check in, flumped into our digs (12th floor corner runway view), and made sure boarding passes / flight apps were presenting as expected.

YHZ View from Alt

The plan for the evening, in its loosest form, was to connect with Pete (to transfer a guitar, mail and some audio work) and shut down early to watch planes from our room ✈️. One does need to be careful, as airports do lend themselves quite easily to “day-drinking” opportunity. We celebrated the chance to create a “hang” for supper and settled into the Alt restaurant, “Sosta”, for late dinner.

Emilie and Pete arrived at about 5:30 and we had a perfect catch up / supper! Great connecting with those kids as they ready for March Break as well. The balance of the evening then turned to charting plane arrivals / departures and viewing from our perch in the Alt. We did manage to circulate the blog haphazardly to family & friends wishing to follow along but hit the bunk early anticipating Saturday would prove a lengthy stretch of travel.

  1. Can’t wait!!! It’s so much fun to read and learn from your journey reports. And starting with a runway view and a beer is the best start to the trip. We’ve only been fortunate enough to do the Croatia territory but your other spots are ‘on the radar’ spots for us. We love when you do all of the legwork for us. I can still remember the first 2 hotel recommendations you passed on to us about 12 years ago. Hotel Piemont in Rome and the Europa Hotel in Madrid. Two hits!!! We’ve passed on those suggestions to many friends over the years with positive feedback from everyone. Safe travels folks!!

    1. I think, Mike, we’ve travelled together, through either your blog or mine, for decades. You’re a trusted travel partner and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Always rely on your input / advise and hope that we can shine a light on a couple of “to visit” spots for you this time around. Knowing that “food” is one of your “gozintas”, we’ll make sure to post lotsa grub photography. Thanks as always for breaking trail on the blog and ask away if you have questions! Cheers…

  2. Can’t wait to follow along for this one dad! It’s not a region I know very much about so I look forward to learning from what you two share here!

    1. As these trips go, I feel a lot better when I get on the ground at my first destination. So far, all we’ve managed is security at Halifax Stanfield 😂 so lots of hoops left today. Sitting and watching planes de-ice and catching up on web updates. The more we researched, the more we found a Balkan visit “suits” us… it’s new earth for us! So glad you’re following along Monica… have a great week ❤️

  3. Excited to share the journey! I’m with ya on the Alt hotel. Curious to see what the weather is like in the Balkans.

    1. Hey there… so glad you’re with us Caitlin! Ms L sends along a big hello 👋. Right now we’re hoping weather holds and we get airborne from HLFX on time. No big connections today other than the journey across to Heathrow. I’ve been tracking daily temps for the cities on our “list” and a cursory review tells me spring is already entrenched there and a daily high of 12-16°C is the norm! For me… that’s just about perfect 👌. Enjoy your break and hello to everyone there! I’ll post some grub pics of the BBQ equipment in Sarajevo for Andrew 👍!

  4. We are following along too Chris and Janie. Look forward to your daily updates. Safe travels today!

    1. So glad to have you along Jen… we love to share this with family & friends. Perhaps it’s the “teacher” in us both that feels the need to pass along what we learn on these trips. I believe we are approaching some 50 or so travel experiences on this site, and know how incredibly fortunate we’ve been to have had the opportunity. Much love ❤️ to you folks and we look forward to sharing this one!

  5. As always, you and Janie have the best adventures! Hoping your flight across the Atlantic is “non-turbulent”. Following……..

    1. Landed in London after a long haul Velma (couple of extra hours wait on the plane in Halifax) but this leg of the journey is done! Wrestle some sleep before we head out early tomorrow. Hoping you have a very restful and well deserved break!
