NFLD ’18 Day Six & Seven

While Mrs Lumsden spent the morning completing her final workshop I lugged out our supplies and did a last check before packing the vehicle. All in, Corner Brook was a neat spot for the event with lots to do and easy access to anything required. Although modest, the accommodations were more than enough and we had a relaxed stay!

Hanger – Harmon US Air Force Base

Next stop… Stephenville! This turned a bit bizarre for us, as we thought we had been to Stephenville last visit only to realize that we really hadn’t entered the city at all… Huh! Regardless, we stopped at a Tim’s and had a coffee/muffin, explored a couple of shopping haunts, and then actually stopped oceanside for sandwiches amid tourists and gulls. Post picnic, we drove around the abandoned military hangers from the once bustling Harmon US Air Force base that was the “bread and butter” to this community.

Isle Aux Morts – Harvey Trail

We drew a late ferry, with an 11:55 PM  departure from Port aux Basques. That being said, we had some time to prowl before boarding. We decided, upon recommendation from the friendly folks at the VIC, to take a spin out the newly paved Rte 470 to the tiny community of Isle Aux Mort. It was here we found the Harvey Trail, a remarkable little seaside walk that had that unique feel of a community owned/cared for attraction. We indeed had the trail to ourselves and wound along the coastal trail taking pictures of plants and the natural features of the landscape. Great stop to whittle away an hour!

Seafood Platter – Harbourview Restaurant

Then back to Port Aux Basques, with supper on the brain. After a quick tour of the community we pulled into a parking space at the Harbour Restaurant. It was all a bit rag tag, with lots of waitress confusion and even a brief power outage! Somehow, it added to the charm of the visit. We went into panic mode when we thought about paying without electricity (and card), but did scrounge enough cash in the vehicle to pay for supper.

Sunrise – MV Highlanders

It was starting to feel very late when our midnight ferry finally departed. We angled into an area where we had good TV access. Rough getting any sleep… Although I know that at one point I woke myself in a huge snore 😴! I was on the move prior to sunrise and caught an excellent photo-op as daylight broke at the stern of the MV Highlanders. Pretty scenic! We hit the ground running in North Sydney and, beyond a fuel stop, headed directly home after reaquainting ourselves with Canada’s youngest province. Cheers…
