Leaving day for us at Great Spruce Head. The morning got off to a quick start with Than and I doing an 8:00 AM run across the bay with a couple of island visitors… Thick ‘o fog! Fun though… Love being on the water. We made great time and were back just in time to grab a freshly prepped coffee and to watch the channel clear.
We settled in to fritter away the morning with a task or two. Shortly after midday all hands hit a vessel. Janie and I coasted along with Than in the little dory, which we’d rigged up with sail and rudder, to strike out for a neighbouring beach. Stephenie and Katie took the Daisy boat, Aaron and the kids toured in his motor powered boat. Just entirely relaxing, with very little wind to actually sail. Some swam, others held the beach down. Nice vista of GSHI directly across from the beach which put the area in perspective.
Then, as quickly as we arrived, it was time to say our goodbyes. Huge thank you to our hosts, Than, Stephenie, Elias and Amelia. So great to see Aaron again and meet Katie too! At 4:00 PM we crossed the bay, which seemed to be teeming with wildlife (birds and even a few porpoise). With the boat changing hands, we said good bye to Thanner and drove north. We had designs on getting to Canada, but after an 1 1/2 we ducked into the Bangor Hampton for one last evening stateside. Heading home kind of mellows the trip, sad it’s coming to an end but hopefully rested and ready for the school year!
Monday morning saw our dash to the border, departing early from Bangor and three quick US stops near Houlton (US Gas, Duty Free Store, Canada Customs). All occurred without incident. Thanks to Janie for keeping track such an exact account of the spending. We sailed through NB and NS without overcast skies but clear roads. We were in the yard by 3:45 PM, just 3800 kms on the trip odometer! Nice to be home…
