We have been so fortunate to be able to travel as we have this summer. Trips east and west combined to allow us standing at attractions as varied and distant as Signal Hill in St. John’s and Stanley Park in Vancouver. It comes at a cost to our kids inheritance, longer grass in the yard, sleeping in a strange bed, kms on the vehicle… but in the end we love to explore and meet the world under our own terms. Over the years, with the kids and as a couple, we’ve grown to accrue a pretty formidable set of travel skills, and have become quite sure-footed in our approach and ability to adapt. Team work wins the day!
In some of my notes, I think I described NFLD as “… a little like going away and being home at the same time.” The landscape, people and connections in economy and culture make this space so familiar. Yet, folks that call islands home are unabashedly passionate, independent and proud of where they come from. That doesn’t mean to cower or become expedient, but to face realities truthfully (often with humour) and to strive to make things better for their own. Amen…
We at present, have no trips planned, but are following some friends that are abroad and continue breaking new ground. We gain energy as we follow along! It’s been great to get back on the move after the Covid void… and 2023 has been a turn around year. I find, as I ease my way through years 55-60, that I’m getting a little more “protective” of my day. I’d rather use that word than selfish I think… but taking time for our summer excursions this year has been a bright spot and the urge to continue is strong.
