Okay… October is officially outstanding. Let the festivities begin 🍁. Not only did we have just one “full week” of school days, but early in the month we were privy to some exceptional weather conditions and first rate fall foliage, all ending with Halloween spooky stuff and meals that featured this year’s harvest!
We kicked off October with a long awaited, much anticipated trek to Maine to visit with our good friends The Sala-Porter Family! Nestled in tiny Appleton Me, we’ve had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving on several occasions at their mid-coast homestead. Always something special afoot there, be it an outdoor fall adventure, harvesting apples, a visit to Miller Cemetery, watching the backyard wildlife corridor or celebration of meal, drink and conversation. Can’t extend thank you 🙏 enough for the open door and warm welcome!
Part of each fall sees the close up routine begin with camp. Chores abound as the weather starts to cool in prep for frost and eventual winter. This year duties began mid-month and included waterline, solar batteries, dock & shower/pump, with the added idea of prepping for a small 2023-24 garden. Lugging in of manure, peat moss, and some knowledge from our Maine visit have us prepping for a patch of garlic 🧄 and onion 🧅! Fingers crossed we’re gonna harvest some fresh root veggies next year!!
Some home maintenance was on the docket for October as well, in the form of a roofing project… basically the lid being down to the felt on the back porch. To prep and make best use of the dumpster, this also meant to demolition of the back patio deck and the porch dormer roof out front. Over the span of two weekends, and angling between some pretty able weather systems and Provincial Conference Day, the project went from a stack of materials to completion! 👍 Big thanks to Buzz, Curtis and Janie for leaning in and making things happen.
